BACKGROUND AND HISTORY

Pillar Kincardine was founded in 1989 as a result of the success of "Stepping Stones" and Pillar Aberdeen’s provision of social and leisure activities for people within the city.

Within South Aberdeenshire, little service existed beyond Community Psychiatric Nurses and generic social workers. It was felt that the need for activity mirroring Pillar Aberdeen’s within a largely rural area with its attendant isolating effects would have similar benefits. Using 16 hours of project worker time, Pillar rapidly made contact with service users over a considerable geographical area developing embryonic services in the Mearns, Portlethen, Stonehaven and Banchory areas. This has now developed to the current position of employing 2 part-time project workers, one part-time admin worker and one full-time service manager. Due to the varied need and number of members, Pillar has also gone through a period of geographical and service reorganisation, providing a more varied range of opportunities to our members whilst losing our direct involvement in service provision in Deeside. Our activities on Deeside have led to the development of a local Mental Health Association.

We now have a range of services provided from a variety of premises and with staff providing those services directly with the assistance of volunteers.

Paralleling these service developments, Pillar’s organisational structure has altered to meet changing demands to reach our current position of being a Charitable Company. Throughout this process Pillar has successfully supported members to become involved in the management of the organisation.
