Pillar Kincardine Policy  -   Relief Workers  -  Revised version adopted 11 August 2009

Relief Workers

  1. From time to time Pillar Kincardine will require to augment its permanent staffing arrangements by the use of relief staff.  Relief staff may be required to cover unplanned leave (such as sick leave) and/or planned leave (such as holidays, maternity leave, etc.).
  2. While we cannot prescribe the actual level of relief staff that will be required, the Service Manager will keep this constantly under review.
  3. Unqualified relief staff will be recruited at the level of a Grade 10* Support Worker and may, after appropriate experience, rise to Grade 18*, Senior Support Worker.  Qualified staff will be recruited at the Senior Support worker grade.
  4. Duties will be commensurate with the Grade.  Workers on Grade 10* will not be asked to take sole charge of a group or session, while workers on Grade 18* may be so entrusted.
  5. Recruitment procedures for relief staff will be as for permanent staff but they will be offered a Casual Services - Zero Hours contract.  This contract will not oblige Pillar to offer any work to the relief worker, nor will it oblige the relief worker to accept any or all of the work Pillar may offer them.  Rather, the contract will allow Pillar to offer work to the relief worker as and when the need arises, whilst allowing the relief worker a free choice on every such occasion either to accept or to decline the work on offer, without their choice on any one such occasion affecting the likelihood of Pillar offering them work on another, separate occasion.
  6. Enhanced disclosure will be required of all individuals prior to their being engaged either as qualified or as unqualified workers (see our Policy on Protecting Vulnerable People).

        * As of August 2009 ACVO scale point 10 equates to the bottom of GS1/2 and scale point 18 to the top of AP1.
